Chefs

Kasey and Kārena Bird

Charismatic sisters and chefs, Kasey and Kārena are sharing New Zealand's unique connection to the land and sea through their food. Having grown up in the beautiful beachside community of Maketu – a place where the community comes together to grow and source fresh, seasonal produce – Kasey and Kārena have turned their passion for cooking into bright careers, giving them a platform create dishes that celebrate their Māori whakapapa and upbringing.

The sister duo’s culinary journey took flight in 2014 when they were crowned winners of MasterChef New Zealand. Since then, they have travelled to more than 50 destinations across the globe, published two cookbook and filmed two seasons of their own cooking series, Kārena and Kasey’s Kitchen Diplomacy. They have also cooked for several New Zealand dignitaries and events including New Zealand Consulate in Shanghai and New Caledonia, ANZAC celebrations in Los Angeles, and New Zealand Embassies in Indonesia, Italy, Chile and South Korea.

During Taste New Zealand, Kasey and Kārena will bring their unique heritage, vibrant energy and passion for New Zealand food via cooking demonstrations, a specially curated dish and a one-of-a-kind multi-course degustation.
